The Full Moon Yoga Class Series
Each month, roll out your yoga mat for a special class that will will both energize and relax you, soothe your soul, and connect you more deeply to your Self. The lunar cycle offers a natural monthly reminder to check in, contemplate, and align your personal energy with Mother Nature. The Full Moon offers a regular opportunity to celebrate the power of feminine energy in supportive community and to harness your prana-shakti—the vitality that makes you who you are. In this class you will move, rest, laugh, share, listen, and learn while holding space for the feminine spirit. No yoga experience necessary! The movement portion will always be gentle and simple.
The Flower Moon
According to Almanac.com, May’s Full Moon is known as the Flower Moon by the Algonquin and Naudowessie tribes. This name represents the abundance of blooms across North America in the month of May. More recently, this particular moon has become famous from the Academy Award nominated film Killers of the Flower Moon directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Lily Gladstone, Leonardo Dicaprio, and Robert Deniro. The film is based on a true story involving murders of Osage tribe members over land and mineral rights-disputes after oil was found on tribal lands.
Step into your full bloom
Welcome to the peak of spring season. A time to celebrate the beauty and bounty of all the blooms that have been waiting so long to arrive. This is your time to shine, to blossom, to share, to move out into the world and to be fully, wholly you. Of course, you might not be feeling this energy at all. Nature is also moving into a transition period from spring to summer; any change can feel vulnerable, uncertain, or uncomfortable. For us here in Northern Virginia the suffocating humidity has already arrived and it can really dampen all the light, playful energy of springtime.
Spend some time around the Full Moon this month thinking about how you can best show up as yourself in all your activities. Do something just for you. Wear what makes you feel good, even if you have nowhere to go. Write what your soul yearns to say, even if it feels scary. Take one action toward something you’ve always wanted to do.
Blossoming doesn’t always have to be loud. It can also be quiet, thoughtful, graceful, and purposeful. There is no one right way to bloom. Be whatever color you want to be, whatever shape feels right to you, for however long you can easefully sustain such energy. Then come back inside and rest. Blooming can be beautiful, fun, and pretty, but it also requires incredible amounts of energy. Even the flowers don’t stick around forever—eventually they die off and give way to the hardier leaves, which come autumn will change again and fall away.
In our class this month we’ll play with the idea of blooming. Movement will build up to an energizing flower-focused flow ending with some much deserved rest and rejuvenation.
