The Full Moon Series
This year I’m committing to offering a yoga class for every Full Moon. The lunar cycle offers a fabulous natural reminder to check in, contemplate, and celebrate. The Full Moon reminds you to celebrate your strengths and power, your prana-shakti energy—the vitality that makes you who you are. It’s also a time to come together with your fellow sisters in community to celebrate the power of feminine energy. It’s a force to be reckoned with and is worth embracing, cultivating, and sharing.
Coming to class to celebrate the Full Moon will energize and relax you, soothe your soul, and connect you more deeply to your Self. You’ll move, rest, laugh, share, listen, and learn. This is a time for you, for women, for the feminine spirit, for your body, for your mind, for your soul. No yoga experience necessary! The movement portion will always be gentle and simple.
The Snow Moon
February’s Full Moon is known as the Snow Moon because February is supposed to be the snowiest month (in the US). Because this is a boring name, I actually prefer the traditional Cree Nation name: the Bald Eagle Moon.
Snow is polarizing. Some people love it, others hate it. When I think of snow, I think of beauty, cozy fires, fuzzy fleece blankets, and delicious hot chocolate. As for the eagles, I am very fortunate to live near the Potomac River and there are many bald eagles around our area. My family and I love to look for the bald eagles that perch on the top of the steeple of a local church on the way to and from my son’s preschool.
From a seasonal perspective, we’re still in winter but we’re moving toward spring. My husband missed dinner the other day because he thought it was much earlier than it was—the light is returning in the evening! You may be feeling the stirrings of spring and want to get out there in the world to work on your projects and get things moving. But it’s not quite time yet. Hold back just a little longer and give yourself the gift of extra rest and reflection. This extra rest will give you the energetic reserves you need for a full spring and summer. It will sustain you into fall and prepare you for an even cozier winter next year.
In celebration of snow (of which we don’t get nearly enough of anymore in Northern Virginia) and the eagles, we will practice cozy movement and of course, Eagle pose—you can’t not celebrate the Eagles without an Eagle pose. We’ll end with a wonderfully restful Yoga Nidra.
What we’ll do in this yoga class
In this class we will start with some gentle, cozy movement designed to keep your focus inward.
We’ll practice breath work to soothe the nervous system.
I’ll share the myth of Garuda, the namesake of Eagle pose (Garudasana in Sanskrit).
I’ll share a simple, short yoga nidra practice to connect you more deeply with your True Self.
I’ll offer some journaling prompts and the space to share your experiences and connect with others at the end.
I hope you can join us!
