Summer doesn’t officially arrive until June 20, but with Memorial Day come and gone, the end of school in the rearview mirror or fast approaching, and summer-weather already arrived, many of us have already stepped into summer vibes. The Strawberry Moon is the last Full Moon of Spring before the Summer Solstice and it celebrates the sweetness of this seasonal threshold, ripe with invitations to slow down, take it easy, and enjoy the moment.
Other names for this month’s Full Moon include the Arapaho’s Moon When the Buffalo Bellows, the Creek’s Blackberry Moon, and the Shawnee’s Raspberry Moon. Anglo-Saxon traditions prefer Honey Moon, the Chinese call June’s Full Moon the Lotus Moon, and most of Europe calls it the Rose Moon. Regardless of what you call it, this is a time to embrace the sweetness of the last days of Spring and the coming Summer.
Are you making time for what matters most in your life? Enjoying moments of presence in a warm spring breeze, a mouthful of juicy strawberry, the scent of a full-blooming rose?
Now is the time to enjoy the ripening! To step into the sweetness of the season. To engage your senses and be present to the joys of late spring/early summer. To lighten up, loosen up, and confidently flow wherever these transitional, seasonal winds might take you.
I’ve been on vacation this week and had the pleasure of “putting the beach to bed” with a group of volunteers from the sea turtle auxiliary. This group guides tourists on educational beach walks to pick up trash and fill in sandcastle holes to ensure beach safety for the Loggerhead sea turtles that nest along the Hilton Head Island, South Carolina beaches. We learned lots of fun facts including these two:
Loggerhead mamas lay 120 eggs at a time, up to 4 times in the period between May-October. That’s almost 500 eggs in one season! After that, she takes a break for a couple years to get her energy back. This reminded me of how humans need some time for the body to rest before embarking on another pregnancy/project.
Baby loggerheads are sensitive to light; they navigate by the brightest light to make their way back to the ocean after they hatch. The brightest light happens to be the reflection of the moon on the water! This is why it’s so important for beachside residences to turn the lights off or pull the curtains between 10pm-6am lest the baby loggerheads get confused and start scurrying in the wrong direction.
Females, turtles or human, are so awesome. Let us use this time together to celebrate the sweetness of feminine power with gentle movement, rest, and community.
