The Flower Moon represents the abundance of blooms during this time of year. It’s always a treat to look out the window and see a palette of pinks, purples, whites, and reds amongst the green leaves and grass.
Other names for this month’s Full Moon include Planting Moon from the Lakota and Dakota tribes, signifying the time of year for planting seeds. I love this idea of planting seeds now for later in the year, especially because the pressure and intensity of blooming and expression can feel exhausting and overwhelming for us introverts. Blooming can be a subtle and graceful process too. And then there’s the Ogala tribe’s name for the May Full Moon: Moon of the Shedding Ponies. A great reminder that letting go of what we no longer need, like extra thick coats for winter warmth that no longer serve in summer heat, is a natural part of Mother Nature’s seasonal cycles.
Do you feel like you’re blooming these days? Are you opening your heart enough to receive the sunlight, the rain, and the nourishment that sustains beauty? Are you stepping into the light, outside of your comfort zone, and appropriately challenging yourself to be seen as your authentic Self?
Now is the time to step into the light! To embody beauty, whatever that means to you. To express yourself in the way only you can. To open your heart, mind, and soul to the infinite possibilities available to you.
The idea of blooming feels a bit off-cycle for me personally as I hibernate at home with my newborn. At the same time, I’m feeling intense surges of creative energy inviting me to step forward toward my life-long dream of being an author. I’ve had so many ideas about how to make this Substack community valuable to you, how to differentiate myself as a yoga teacher, and how to integrate my passions for philosophy, yoga lifestyle, and writing, while still keeping your interest. I’ve even come up with some ideas for children’s books! As the saying goes, when it rains, it pours.
It’s important to remember that blooms are fleeting. The azalea blooms are in their prime for maybe a week. Then they shrivel up and fall off the bush. They’re tired. They’ve had enough. Time to retire and wait a whole YEAR before they do that again. It takes so much energy to sustain a bloom. All of that unseen work goes on in the time between summer and spring—three quarters of the year. All for a week of spotlight.
Let’s move together, be together in community, and bloom together before we go retreat inside and return to the business of sustaining, nourishing, harvesting, and resting.
