Step outside and find yourself
learning from, with, and through nature
Dear readers,
Maycember is no joke. I’ve been feeling anxious lately because of all the calendar commitments and most especially because I’ve been trying new things.
This past week, I went on a 24-hour overnight trip with my son’s first grade class to the wilderness.
It’s amazing what happens to your body and mind when surrounded by trees, dirt, birds, fresh air, and a stream.
Spending time in nature is so grounding and restorative.
I lost track of time, my anxieties eased, I was able to access child-like joy simply from being outside all day with eleven 7-year-olds.
My wish is that every child could learn the healing powers of nature. The program included a hike, a square-dance, a nature quest, and three workshops, which involved hiking to a hollow tree and playing in the woods, putting nets in the pond to see what you can catch, and observing nature and drawing what you see. Simple, fun, natural tasks that seem mundane but offer so much learning.
Wouldn’t it be something if every school curriculum taught the power of nature?
Wouldn’t it be something if the next generation grew up respecting Mother Nature?
The kids loved every second of getting to go to school in the woods.
The parents were reminded that life really begins when you set down your screens, forget about the outside world, and just let yourself immerse in childhood wonder amidst the trees.
